SOUTH BEND — This years Fifth Annual St. Joe River Marathon Kayak and Canoe Race will be dedicated to the memory of Patrick Sawyer, a well-known local paddler who was struck by a car while riding his bicycle July 16, and later died from his injuries.

The race, slated to be Sept. 27 at Veteran’s Memorial Park near Indiana University South Bend, features classes for most canoes and kayaks, from racing boats to recreational vessels. Courses of 7.2 miles and three miles will be used for the races.

According the race organizers, the net proceeds from both the event and decal and hat sales at the race will be donated to the Sawyer Family Fund, a fund established to help Patrick’s wife, Nancy, and the couple’s children.

Registration for the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. EDT, with racing to begin at 10 a.m. EDT. For more information, visit:
