Family Remembers Murdered South Bend Teen

By Chris Henderson

(WSBT) She was shot and killed on prom night and now her family is talking about the murder.

16-year-old Ja-Vonda Tharbs died of multiple gun shot wounds early Saturday morning. Her body was found at her sister's apartment in the Beacon Heights Apartment complex on South Bend's west side.

Tharbs' mother says the girl was waiting for her to take her to the after prom. Less than a hour after the two spoke, Ja-Vonda was dead.

"When I got there, a police officer informed me she had been shot," said Yvonne Fountain.

Ja-Vonda was a student at Washington High School and had just made the cheerleading squad for the next school year.

Police have made no arrests in connection with her death.
