SOUTH BEND — There are new details about the Southeast Park shooting suspect. The man arrested, Gary Stokes, worked in a South Bend school. Court documents from 1991 indicate Stokes also had been shot by the man he's accused of killing.

In addition to working at Harrison Primary Center in South Bend, Stokes served as a volunteer and media coordinator for the Southeast Side reunion. It was at that reunion where police say Stokes killed Deric Foulks and injured Mario Rhodes. He's charged with murder and battery with a deadly weapon.

In court documents filed Monday afternoon, prosecutors allege that Stokes walked up to Foulks at the reunion. After speaking with him, Stokes is accused of pulling out a handgun and shooting Foulks. Stokes told police he thought Foulks was armed, but he did not see a gun.

While the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office would not confirm the relationship, court documents dating back to 1991 show the victim of Saturday's shooting, Deric Foulks, was arrested and sentenced to prison for attempted murder. Foulks was involved in the shooting of Gary Stokes, his son and a third person.
