Friends, Family Remember Murdered South Bend Student

By Jerry Siefring

(WSBT) Local students look for closure as they mourn the violent death of one of their classmates.

16-year-old Ja-Vonda Tharbs was shot to death inside South Bend's Beacon Heights Apartments early Saturday morning.

Thursday morning, her classmates at Washington High School held a memorial service for the teen. They gathered in prayer with Ja-Vonda’s family.

“I don’t know, I just loved her so much and it’s hard to let a good person like that go,” said Chiante Clark, one of Ja-Vonda’s friends.

Yvonne Fountain, Ja-Vonda’s mother, remained positive as the students mourned the loss of their friend.

“I think the Lord has blessed us to come together as a unit,” Fountain told NEWS22. “And I think the young people are going to turn South Bend around.”

Ja-Vonda’s funeral will take place Friday. Police have not made any arrests in her death.
