Sheriff Recommends Officers Be Fired

By Jerry Siefring

(WSBT) Two St. Joseph County police officers could lose their jobs.

That was the recommendation from St. Joseph County Sheriff Frank Canarecci. Tuesday, he said both men should be fired for not cooperating with an internal investigation.

NEWS22 first broke the news in late May that the Cpl. Andrew Taghon and Cpl. Ryan Huston are subjects of a federal investigation. Taghon and Huston are accused of four are accused of four violations of the merit code, including conduct unbecoming to an officer, obeying of orders, internal investigations, and truthfulness.

Canarecci says both officers refused to cooperate with an internal investigation. He says that's the first time that's happened since he's been sheriff.

“I guess that you could say that they forced our hand,” Canarecci told NEWS22. “Without cooperating in the internal, we had to take action with this part.”

The officers now have 14 days to respond to the charges. They also have the option to resign.

Meanwhile, a South Bend Police officer is also under federal investigation. Jamie Buford has been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation.
