A look at extended jobless benefits in Indiana

The high number of out-of-work residents collecting jobless benefits in Indiana has triggered an automatic 13-week extension of unemployment benefits. A look at the state's extended benefits program:

THE BENEFIT: Pays the same as typical unemployment benefits, a maximum of $390 a week. Program includes up to 13 additional weeks of benefits.

JOB SEARCH REQUIRED: People collecting extended benefits must apply for three jobs per week and maintain a work search log. They must accept any job offer that they can physically perform if it pays at or above minimum wage. The Department of Workforce Development will audit applications and check up on job searches, and those not meeting the rules will be immediately disqualified.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?: Those who have exhausted up to 59 weeks of state and federal unemployment benefits, and have an unemployment insurance end date on or after March 21, 2009. About 3,400 people are expected to qualify immediately, with 2,000 more qualifying every week.

HOW TO APPLY: Initial applications must be made in person at a WorkOne Center. People must bring their eligibility letter and proof of identification. First applications will be accepted March 25, and initial applications will take 21 days to process payment.

HOW TO FILE CLAIMS: Weekly claims must be filed online. There are no paper vouchers available.
