Neighbors Still Unhappy With Elkhart Mega Shredder

By Jerry Siefring

(WSBT) They lodged their complaints about a local business, but now one neighborhood group says the problems are still there.

They say noise, dust, and vibrations from a mega shredder at Sturgis Iron and Metal aren't acceptable. The company used the shredder to recycle junk cars.

Neighbors have been complaining about the noise and dust created by the machine since it went online. The city has been working with the company to address the complaints, setting up a timetable for fixes. But resident feel they haven't been working fast enough.

“The noise is constantly,” neighbor Army Houston told WSBT News. “It goes on all day long, at night.”

“Our homes are still being vibrated by the mega shredder, there’s still the noise problem,” said Darrin Snyder Belousek. “The mega shredder produces an obnoxious odor.”

Neighbors will meet with Elkhart mayor David Miller next week.
