Mega Shredder Company Installing Sound Barrier

By Jerry Siefring

(WSBT) Work is under way to clear up some concerns with a giant car recycling plant in Elkhart.

Neighbors have complained about the noise, smell, and vibrations coming from the Mega-Shredder plant in Elkhart. Sturgis Iron and Metal, the company that operates the device, is installing a 15-foot acoustical wall around the plant.

“This fence it self will go around the shredder and it will help reduce the noise that people hear in the neighborhood,” project manager Kevin Young told WSBT News. “And it will reduce the noise from one side of the fence, to the other by 33 decibels.”

The company hopes to have the wall done by the end of December. It’s also working on fixing problems with odors and vibrations.
