SOUTH BEND — A South Bend Police officer accused of hitting his wife will have to keep his distance.

Sgt. Wayne Boocher is a 15-year veteran of the police force. Investigators say he hit his wife in the mouth and took her cell phone at the Target store on Ireland Road in January.

During a court appearance Tuesday a judge ordered Boocher to stay away from his wife. He's also on unpaid leave from the department.
