Immigration officials raid Mishawaka business

By Jerry Siefring

The nationwide immigration issue hit home at a Mishawaka business Tuesday morning. Federal immigration and custom agents took three dozen workers from Janco Composites into custody.

The plant is located on Logan Street in Mishawaka. A spokesperson from Immigration and Custom Enforcement told WSBT News that several sources provided credible information about suspected undocumented workers at the company.

More than 50 ICE agents raided Janco and took 36 suspected undocumented workers into custody. They put the men and women on a waiting bus and vans at the company.

Agents also seized documents and files as part of their investigation. This came as authorities conducted an audit of employment records in January. The company also faces federal criminal allegations in connection with this investigation.

“ICE is responsible, has a responsibility to enforce the laws as they are currently written and we will continue to do so,” said spokesperson Gail Montenegro.

“Undoubtedly a good number of these folks are my parishioners,” said Fr. Christopher Cox, C.S.C., of St. Adalbert Parish in South Bend. “And they can feel very alone at a time like this, being here inside the bus they can at least see that I’m out here and they are not alone; there are people standing with them on this.”

Officials tell WSBT News the workers will be processed at a facility in Illinois and then face immigration hearings. We tried to get in touch with company officials but were not able to do so Tuesday.
