Police Officer Dies in South Bend Shooting

By WSBT News1

(WSBT) One police officer is dead, and another is in stable condition after they were shot on the city's southeast side early Tuesday morning.

The officers were responding to a call about shots fired at 1:37 a.m. when they were shot near the Wooden Indian Motel, 1631 Lincoln Way East, said South Bend Chief of Police Thomas Fautz. They were allegedly shot by a lone gunman, who was also killed during the shoot-out.

Both officers were rushed to Memorial Hospital after the shooting. Cpl. Nick Polizzotto died from wounds suffered in the shooting, Fautz said. Patrolman Michael Norby is in stable condition and is recovering from wounds he received in the shooting.

More than 50 emergency units responded to the scene at one point in the morning.

Members of the South Bend SWAT team had cleared all the rooms at the motel in a search for additional victims as of about 3:15 a.m., according to a Tribune report.

As of about 10 a.m. part of Lincoln Way East in the area of the Wooden Indian was still closed to traffic, but two lanes are now open.
