New Details Released in Officer Shootings

By Beth Boehne

(WSBT) In a news conference Tuesday afternoon, St. Joseph County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Dvorak released new details in the shootings of South Bend Police Cpl. Nick Polizzotto and Patrolman Michael Norby.

At around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, police received calls of shots fired near Club Landing on Lincolnway East in South Bend. Cpl. Polizzotto and Patrolman Norby responded. Witnesses indicated the suspect was at the Wooden Indian Motel.

Officers learned the gunman lived in apartment no. 127 of the Wooden Indian Motel. Officers Jim Sweeney and Nick Zarate arrived on the scene as Cpl. Polizzoto and Patrolman Norby approached the suspect's door. Polizzoto and Norby knocked on the door and spoke with the suspect for 10-15 seconds before the suspect began firing at the officers.

Polizzotto and Norby were hit by the gunfire. Norby and Zarate returned fire, killing the suspect.

Cpl. Polizzotto died from his injuries. Patrolman Norby was shot in the shoulder and has been released from the hospital.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office reports that all officers at the scene were wearing bullet-resistant vests as a required part of their uniforms.

The suspect's next-of-kin have not been located. Once they are located and notified of the suspect's death, his name will be released.
