(WSBT) The family of Cpl. Nick Polizzotto talked Thursday for the first time since the police officer was killed.

Cpl. Polizzotto was shot and killed Tuesday morning while responding to a call of shots fired near the Wooden Indian Motel in South Bend.

Patrolman Michael Norby was also shot and is recovering.

The gunman, Scott Barnaby, was killed in the shootout. He had been living at the motel.

On Thursday, Cpl. Polizzotto's brother and sister remembered their "little" brother.

"He's a one of a kind person. He would give his shirt of his back for anybody, if he knew you or not," said his sister, Amy Dominguez.

Polizzotto's squad car now sits outside the South Bend Police station overwhelmed by tributes and memories.

His family is now overwhelmed with grief. They say the officer always had a smile on his face. It's something you can see captured in the many photos that sit on his squad car.

"He's just a goober, just a goofball, he was just a lot of fun," said his brother, Tony Polizzotto.

They say he had wanted to be a priest, but instead decided to become a police officer.

"We're so proud of Nick. If you ever wanted someone to serve and protect you, Nick's the one," said Tony.

They say he was a devoted father to his son, Joe. He would make time to take him fishing several times during the year.

While some memories are too hard to tell at this time, they say they will never forget their brother — their hero — Cpl. Nick Polizzotto.

The visitation will be Sunday from 3:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Notre Dame's Joyce Center.

The funeral will also be at the Joyce Monday at 10 a.m.
