Vincent Bach Workers Move To Dissolve Union

By Michael Guilmette

(WSBT) New information has surfaced on the strike at Conn-Selmer's Vincent Bach plant in Elkhart. Union workers still on the job want to get rid of the union.

They already filed the paperwork, but the process is at a standstill after the union filed a lawsuit against the company.

If the request goes through it would mean the end of the strike and the union.

"We were pretty much caught off guard," Jerry Hoogenboom, a 26-year employee, said Thursday.

That's how many striking workers at the Vincent Bach plant feel. Just last week, a bargaining committee was working on another contract proposal.

But when they met Friday, company officials told them workers inside the plant had started the decertification process.

Replacement workers, and those who crossed the picket line, signed a petition to end the union.

"We all felt like we were off guard on that,” Hoogenboom added. “We knew that come the first of April they were able to do that, but we figured since it was getting kind of late in April, that it wasn't going to happen."

But just this week, the decertification process hit a roadblock.

Union president Jerry Stayton filed unknown charges against the company, charges that now have to be investigated by the nation labor relations board.

Workers on the picket line all opted not to make any kind of comment at all regarding the current chain of events about that decertification vote.

Julie Theriault, corporate spokesperson, said in a statement, “The company has not been involved in this process, but has become aware of it because it was occurring in the plant. We can only sit back and wait to see what happens."

For now, striking workers are also waiting to see what happens next.

The union is working toward a vote on the latest contract proposal, but several have already failed. As for the move to drop the union, if the process is allowed to resume, workers inside the plant would still need to take a vote.
