Development to Bring 4,000 Jobs to SW Michigan

By WSBT News1

(WSBT) A plan to turn part of southwest Michigan, including Benton Harbor, into one of the hottest vacation destinations in the country is set to be unveiled Monday. Michigan's Governor Jennifer Granholm is scheduled to help kick off the new development project.

The project, called the “Harbor Shores” Development, is targeted toward families and Baby Boomers. The Harbor Shores Development is a 530-acre project that also promises to bring new tourism, new residential living and new business opportunities to the area.

Harbor Shores will span parts of Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and Benton Charter Township. It will bring more than 850 residential units, marinas, hotels, an indoor water park, an 18-hole golf course and several new public waterfront access points.

The project's developers also promise to bring a lot of new jobs to the area. During construction, more than 4,000 jobs will be available. Developers say after construction, 2,000 permanent jobs will be created.

Construction on Harbor Shores is expected to begin this July on the Golf Course. Enhancements of Jean Klock Park will also start this summer. Construction will continue through 2012.

The Harbor Shores project is designed to enhance the current condition of Jean Klock Park. The dunes and the marsh will not be removed, and people will still be able to go to the beach. There won't be any golf holes on the beach, but there will be three holes in the park.
