Moving Businesses Changing the Face of Grape Road

By Michael Guilmette

(WSBT) Work is underway to add on to University Park Mall. There's also an explosion of growth on the city's northeast side.

Another business is moving from a store at a Grape Road shopping center and it will leave another vacancy among others along the corridor. It's something some shoppers are noticing.

"Grape Road isn't Grape Road anymore. I think Main Street and farther down is more Grape Road. Grape Road is almost outdated," said Debbie Belardinella, who shops on Grape Road.

In fact, Tribune business writer Heidi Prescott reports Barnes and Noble could move to the U.P. Mall once the mall's expansion is done.

"I think Grape Road used to be called the 800 pound gorilla and I think now you might want to call it the 750 pound gorilla," Prescott said.

A Mishawaka planner said a new steak house will move into this vacant building. He says that shows there's still a level of interest on Grape.

Prescott agrees.

"So I think over time these centers will fill. I don't know if they'll fill like they were filled in the late 80s or early 90s, but I don't think they'll be vacant forever,” she said.

But some wonder just how long can the big growth can go on.

"I'm hearing both that the area might have enough retail or might be oversaturated, but then I’m also hearing they are plenty of retailers out there that want to be here."

"They need to update everything because of everything was built so long ago," Belardinella said.

One shopper said she would like to see more entertainment for families rather than stores and restaurants.
