Investigators Probing Cause of Deadly VIM Fire

By Michael Guilmette

(WSBT) Monday was really the first chance investigators were able to take a look at what's left of the VIM Recycling Plant in Elkhart County.

State and federal agencies were at the scene looking for a cause and any possible violations.

Investigators say there's no evidence of foul play. Their investigation is centered on the inside of the building. OSHA and ICE were also on scene investigating possible violations related to the workers at the plant at the time of the explosion.

Investigators believe the first explosion happened in the northern portion of the VIM building. That explosion then sparked two more explosions. Fire then pushed outside to the piles of wood and mulch in the middle of the plant.

"We had two different fires. We had a structure fire, then we had an outside one. The field and so forth, the mounds were on fire so the fire then had a real hard time," said state fire investigator Jeff Roseboom.

During the fire at VIM firefighters had to use more than 50 hoses from Baugo Township alone, when a normal house fire requires they use about eight hoses. That's not including the hoses from the more than 40 departments that also responded.

"It's been a real struggle. Manpower issues, the heat's been terrible for the past few days and generally everybody's just worn out. Lack of sleep and things like that," said Baugo Township Fire Capt. Tim Graves.

Emergency Management officials, the owners’ insurance company and the owner himself will likely have to pay the bulk of the costs of the response and cleanup.

"I'm sure it's going to be up there really high. Between the damage to the building, clean up and everything probably close to a million dollars," Graves added.
