VIM Plant Will Rebuild Despite Concerns of Neighbors

By Beth Boehne

(WSBT) It looks like a neighborhood effort to shut down a recycling plant after a massive fire won't succeed without a fight.

Earlier this month, a huge fire broke out at the VIM plant in Baugo Township.

The three day blaze killed one employee and seriously hurt another.

Neighbors started a petition drive to keep the company from re-opening, because they were worried about safety and air quality.

Now, there's word the company plans to rebuild.

“VIM is working closely with the state agencies which protect those issues of quality of life and environment, to make sure things like this don't happen again.”

Tom Holt, a spokesman for VIM Recycling, says the company has heard neighbors’ concerns about the operation and fire, and plans to address those while rebuilding.

“We're doing everything we can, talking to engineers and researching to see if we can find improved technology and systems to put in the new facility that will limit the exposure to accidents,” Holt told WSBT News.

Neighbors say they are leery of rebuilding plans because of past problems at the facility.

“A life has been lost there, another person’s been injured, and there’ve been petitions and complaints before, but it doesn’t seem that anybody’s gonna hold him accountable for anything,” said Tammy Justice, who lives by the plant.

“It’s a tragedy that this had to take a human life to draw this much attention after to complaints, the fires,” said neighbor Daryl Clipp. “Somebody ought to pay attention here."

Again everyone WSBT News talked to in the neighborhood surrounding the operation says they are not against it being in business. They would only like to see it go somewhere else.

“I think what they’re doing is necessary,” Wilma Wolford said. “But they don't need to do it in a neighborhood full of young children and people."

“I agree with their right to business, but we need safety and health, around here for us,” said Earl Wolford.

Neighbors plan to meet with local and state officials on July 14 at Jimtown North Elementary School. The meeting starts at 2 p.m.
