Police Wonder if Recent Fires are Connected

By Beth Boehne

(WSBT) Another Hispanic store went up in flames in Elkhart County. Less than two weeks after three fires at stores in Elkhart, a Hispanic market in Goshen went up in flames Tuesday morning.

Goshen's fire chief wants to know if the same people are behind the fires.

"We lost everything. Everything is [in the] fire. Everything came down. It's terrible,” said Tony Garcia Galanes of Los Galanes Market.

Galanes and some family members owned the grocery store that went up in flames early Tuesday morning.

The building was a total loss. There was also close to $300,000 worth of groceries inside at the time of the fire.

"In this store I have everything. So everything that I have I lost right now,” Galanes said. “So I don't know what I can do."

Tim Madison witnessed the fire. He lives just across the street.

"Well when I came out of the house, [it was] totally engulfed in flames, and numerous fire personnel [were] already on the scene,” explained Madison.

Fire crews spent the early morning hours putting out the fire, then started removing a lot of debris to begin looking for a cause.

"We have a large amount of equipment coming in, as far as heavy equipment from the city, to take out some of it for us so we can start the investigation on the interior,” explained Scott McDowell of the Goshen Fire Department.

Investigators say they are aware of suspicious fires late last month in two Hispanic-owned businesses in Elkhart. They will be checking to see if there is any connection.

"We will be contacting Elkhart Fire and we will be sitting down to take a look at their fires, we'll take a look out our fires, and see if there are any similarities or any thing in common," Goshen Fire Chief told WSBT News.

The store was closed for renovation work, so there was no gas or electric on when the fire happened.

Investigators want to determine if there's a connection to the following fires in Elkhart:

June 27

  • Fire at vacant building owned by Hispanics, being renovated into a restaurant

June 28
  • Fire at Mi Tierra Catering storage shed
  • Robbery and fire at Tres Mil Pas Grocery
