What is being done to David Snyder for being so far behind on his child support payments?

By Beth Boehne

(WSBT) A controversial local politician could go to jail over unpaid child support.

In Wednesday’s Good Question, Larry from Mishawaka wants to know, "What's being done by the prosecutor towards Roseland Town Councilman David Snyder for being so far behind in his child support payments?"

David Snyder has already been to jail this year. He now faces the possibility of going back.

In January Snyder was arrested, accused of assaulting fellow Roseland town council member Ted Penn.

This time if Snyder returns to jail it won't be over a physical altercation. Snyder's been held in contempt of court for failing to keep up on child support payments.

Snyder, currently married to Dorothy, has two kids from a previous marriage in Texas. Snyder told WSBT News he thinks he owes about $95,000 in child support, which he blames on a bout with cancer, moving to a new area, and a judge's decision last year to strip him of his real estate license.

St. Joseph County Prosecutor Mike Dvorak asked for the license to be suspended because Snyder owed child support. Dvorak's office says during a sentencing hearing next week a magistrate could punish Snyder with up to six months in jail for not living up to his payment plan.

In 2005 Snyder faced a similar situation. A judge sentenced him to 45 days in jail, but he came up with more than $11,000 and avoided serving time.

Snyder would not talk on camera for this story. He says he doesn't want to upset the court.

The sentencing hearing is July 26.
