Arrested workers await fate

By WSBT News1

Immigration officials raided a local factory in March, but many of the people arrested still haven't learned their fate.

Federal agents arrested 36 people at Janco Composites in Mishawaka. They're suspected of being undocumented workers.

One worker was found to be a legal resident and was released. Four were deported to their home countries. Thirty-one bonded out of jail, and are awaiting their hearings.

Many of these workers have families, and they're worried about what will happen to them if they are deported. WSBT News spoke with one worker through an interpreter.

Ledy Sandoval says she was working at Janco Composites when agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement came into the building. She says they handcuffed the workers on their hands and feet.

Sandoval says none of the workers was allowed to see an attorney before they were taken to the detention facility in McHenry County, Ill. She spent a week there before paying bond and coming back to South Bend. Now she waits to see whether she can stay in a country she's grown to love.

She says moving to this country allowed her two oldest daughters to become professionals. And with the situation now, she doesn't know if her youngest daughter will have the same opportunity.

In the end, she says she and other immigrants don't want to be a burden to American society. They just want to work.

Sandoval's deportation hearing is later this month.

ICE says it has a responsibility to enforce immigration laws. It goes on to say these raids serve as a deterrent to both undocumented workers and those who hire them.

There's a chance some of the workers may be allowed to stay in the country, especially if they've been here more than 10 years.
