(WSBT) Saturday morning some people who live near Elkhart's Mega Shredder held an informational meeting and prayed for peace.

The prayer vigil was organized by the group Residents for Environmentalism Stand Together (REST).

They discussed their concerns with the amount of noise, the smell and the vibrations the machine puts out when it’s crushing heavy metal.

They want the company to lower its noise levels and they want the city to enforce it.

“I’ve never participated in politics, never cared anything for it, but this is my home now so I feel as though I should stand up and speak for my home," said Army Houston, a community outreach coordinator for REST. "And I wish and pray that more people would do the same thing.”

The city of Elkhart hired a private firm to test if noise and vibration from the machine violates city ordinances. Testing was suspended last week when a giant rotator in the grinding unit cracked. Testing will resume when the rotator gets back on line.

Monday night the local chapter of the NAACP will hold a meeting about the concerns over the Mega Shredder at the St. James Ame Church on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive at 7 p.m.
