Nicklaus Starts Design on Course in Harbor Shores

By WSBT News1

(WSBT) One of the greatest golfers of all time was in the area Sunday to start design work on a golf course that'll be part of a major development project.

Jack Nicklaus toured the area where one of his Signature Golf Courses will sit. It will be one of the main attractions of the 530-acre Harbor Shores project. It spans parts of Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and Benton Township and will also include an indoor water park, two hotels and new homes.

Nicklaus talked about the impact a golf course can have in a community.

"Many places that we have gone that have been in a distressed situation, you might say, or a depressed situation, the golf course has brought jobs, it's brought tourism, it's brought people, it's brought interest, it's brought the community together," he said. "We hope the same thing happens here."

Nicklaus said work will start shortly on the course and he hopes to have it ready to play in the spring or summer of 2009.

Developers hope to start construction on the housing phase of Harbor Shores early next year.
