Police Crack Down on School Zone Violators

By Beth Boehne

(WSBT) Police are out in full force through southern St. Joseph and northern Marshall counties.

It's a traffic enforcement blitz on U.S. 31, targeting traffic violators around the LaVille school district.

Officers followed buses on their routes.

One trooper even rode inside a bus and called in traffic violations to troopers in squad cars.

Police wrote seven tickets in one hour for drivers who disobeyed stop arms and sped through school zones.

“Bus drivers have, obviously are obligated to get the kids safely to school and drive the bus safely,” explained Sgt. Trent Smith of the Indiana State Police. “And it’s kind of frustrating for them sometimes when they see the people that aren't paying attention or they're racing off the line the second that bus arm drops, or just trying to make the traffic light.”

Police say they plan to have more enforcement blitzes throughout the county.
