State fines VIM Recycling for safety violations

By Beth Boehne

ELKHART — The Indiana Department of Labor is making an Elkhart company pay after it found safety violations at the site of a massive factory explosion and fire.

That fire in June killed one worker and injured another at the VIM Recycling plant.

Inspectors say they found 10 safety violations at the plant, and seven of them are considered serious. Not all of them were related to the fire.

VIM faces $9,950 in fines.

According to I-OSHA, that's close to the average fine when a death is involved.

The company now has 15 days to either pay the fine for ask for meeting with I-OSHA.

The company told WSBT Wednesday it plans to appeal.
