Indicted Officers May Have Sold Gun Linked to Shooting of South Bend Police Officer

By Beth Boehne

(WSBT) Three local officers are in custody, facing federal charges.

Now there's new information about a gun they're accused of selling illegally.

FBI agents arrested South Bend police officer Jamie Buford Monday, along with former St. Joseph County deputies Ryan Huston and Andy Taghon.

They face drug and fraud charges. Taghon also faces charges for selling a gun to a felon and selling a stolen gun.

Those guns may be related to the shooting of a South Bend police officer.

Our partners at The South Bend Tribune found the serial numbers on the guns in this case match those on federal documents connected to the shooting of Cpl. Rick Ruszkowski in 2004.

In the document, Willard King pleaded guilty to federal gun charges in connection to the shooting of Ruszkowski.

That shooting happened around the same time federal prosecutors allege Taghon may have sold the guns.

Tuesday, federal prosecutors also reveled that Taghon, Huston and Buford are also accused of targeting trailers between July 2004 and March 2005 containing stolen merchandise and cocaine, while the owner of the trailer was in jail.

Federal prosecutors say the officers stole the items, sold many of them on eBay, and solicited another person to sell the cocaine.

"No one is more upset with the actions of these two individuals, three individuals, in law enforcement, than those of us in law enforcement," said St. Joseph County Sheriff Frank Canarecci.

Canarecci says he knew of the seriousness of this case from the beginning. It prompted an internal investigation and the subsequent firing of both county officers last year.

But South Bend Police Officer Buford is still on paid leave.

“Following state law in 2006, when this information was presented to me, it was unclear what his involvement would be,” explained Fautz.

Chief Fautz says he plans to call a special meeting with the Board of Public Safety to change Buford's status to administrative leave without pay.

“I would just like to say the information contained in these indictments is very troubling and certainly the officers betrayed the trust of the community,” said Fautz.

A fourth man has also been indicted — Daniel Alvarez of South Bend.

He faces one count of selling a stolen firearm, and for not cooperating with the FBI.

All the men will be in court Wednesday afternoon to determine if bond will be set.
