(WSBT) When residents in Dowagiac need an ambulance, chances are they might know the medic coming to help.

“You’re seeing somebody who you taught school to or who was your customer or your neighbor kid,” said paramedic Jackie Evans.

It’s a small town service in small town Michigan. It’s also why some are concerned about the arrival of a new crew to save lives.

Over the summer, nearby Coloma Emergency Medical Services (CEMS) appeared as the front-runner to take over financially-struggling emergency service in Dowagiac. An ambulance would still be stationed in town and CEMS was the only company that wouldn't charge taxpayers a subsidy. But for some people, that was a red flag.

“People are wondering how you can run an ambulance service without the money there to do it,” said council member Dr. Charlie Burling.

After hearing from a vocal audience Monday night, the council decided to delay the vote in search of more information. In the meantime, some medics say they’re worried about keeping their jobs.

“I know this area ... we’ve lived here for years,” said Evans.

But Brian Balow, CEMS Director, said the whole situation has gotten out of hand.

“Those that are qualified, we’ve already said we would welcome them with open arms,” said Balow.

And as for not charing a subsidy to Dowagiac taxpayers, “In Southwest Michigan, there’s been this model that you have to have tax support to run an ambulance company and it’s just not true,” said Balow, who added his company can earn enough from the patients it transports and those patients’ insurance companies.

The next council meeting is planned for January, but council members say they may hold a special meeting before the end of the year to decide.
