Drowning is the second leading cause of death among children. Experts say pool safety is something everyone should know.

In a matter of seconds playing in the pool can turn terrifying. That's why experts say water safety is a must for every family.

Last week, 10-year-old Christian Barnes jumped in the pool to get something at the bottom.

The Goshen Schools superintendent says his movements stopped and that's when a lifeguard rescued him and began CPR.

He was airlifted to a hospital, breathing but unconscious.

Lifeguards at Knollwood Country Club in Granger say parents need to know how to properly use flotation devices — like making sure a life jacket fits properly and doesn't ride up past the neck. Also know what levels your kids can swim at and when they get fatigued.

“Make sure that parents know proper flotation devices — like a noodle is not going to be a life saver — if they wear a life jacket make sure it fits properly and it doesn't ride up past the neck.”

The Govern family says there's nothing better than playing in the pool on Memorial Day, but with that fun in the sun comes safety.

"When we moved here, we thought it was high time we take lessons again," said John Govern.

John’s father Kevin takes precautions even though his kids have taken lessons.

"Both of my kids know how to swim they have had Red Cross approved training and then we always watch them,” said Govern.

Experts say talk to your kids about safety and setting guidelines and ground rules for the pool.
