SOUTH BEND — A South Bend church was vandalized late Sunday, leaving its congregation to wonder why.

Police and fire crews were sent to the Church of Christ in the 1800 block of Caroline Street shortly after 9 p.m. when the broken windows, graffiti and other damage was discovered.

Church trustee James Pedan told WSBT that it's by far the worst damage the church has ever seen from vandals, who've struck before.

"It makes me sad," he said. "Sad that we've got people like that who would do things like that. And they're never caught. They get by with it."

Several first and second floor windows were shattered, and the vandals tried to set fire to church classroom items.

Graffiti was spray-painted along the outside walls, with some reports of damage in the sanctuary.

The South Bend Fire Department said an arson investigator was notified because of areas in the church where fire was started, and the case remains under investigation.
