GOSHEN — Many people are changing how they shop for groceries, but they still want nutritious food. Local farmers markets are seeing an increase in demand for home grown produce.

During the last couple of months, Kercher's Sunrise Orchards has seen an increase in business at their farm market. They grow some of what they sell and some of it comes from other local growers.

"Folks are just watching every penny now,” Maureen Kercher said. “They're coming [because] they want freshness, they want local, they don't want to pay for all the shipping. They're looking to save a dime, to save a dollar."

Many customers live on a fixed income and other recently lost their jobs.

“Everybody is always pinching pennies, but around Elkhart County, it's gotten worse and worse — people getting laid off — and so they're being very careful,” she said.

Customers told WSBT News they know what they buy at Kercher’s will be fresh and ultimately will save them on their food purchases.

“The cost and the nutrition and all of the freshness that you can get here is just much more valuable,” said Pat Hochstedler of Goshen. “Especially in today's market when we can't waste dollars on food."

“As to price, I must say I feel they're certainly competitive with the grocery stores where I do the rest of my shopping,” said customer David Rhudy.

"Sometimes it's pretty tight, but I haven't gone hungry. I am retired, a widow and on a fixed income I don't buy a lot but when I buy, I want to have it fresh,” said JoAnne Penland.
