ST. JOSEPH CO. — As the price for metal climbs, thieves have hit homes near Orchid and Fullmore roads a number of times over the past six weeks. Everything from lawn ornaments to air conditioning units have been stolen.

Neighbors in that area say thieves there are bold and brazen.

"They don't hide anymore," said Lucy Cruz. "In broad daylight they do this."

Linda Farmer added, "They steal anything and everything."

As the two women congregate in their yards, they recount dozens of instances when they and their neighbors were targeted by thieves hoping to make a quick buck by stealing metal from yards.

"I've got lights everywhere, that still doesn't deter them," said Farmer. "They stole my dog house and the only aluminum on it was around the roof."

Cruz said, "Central air conditioning units were taken out of my relative's house and other people around the neighborhood, in broad daylight."

Simple lawn ornaments and playground equipment will also get a few bucks.

"They've tried to steal my swing set," said Farmer. "I almost cried because I got this for my grandkids."

While police officers say the numbers are down in South Bend, it's difficult for them to make an arrest.

"You can't protect everything," South Bend Police Captain Phil Trent said. "There are precautions you can take."

Trent encourages homeowners to take a photo of their items and serial numbers. It would be easier for officers to find stolen goods with that information.

In the meantime, Cruz says she'll keep a watchful eye on the neighborhood, working together with neighbors.

Farmer says she'll make her items more difficult to steal. "I try not to have anything out here anymore."
