SOUTH BEND — Interim Superintendent James Kapsa says South Bend Schools are taking a closer look at security after another gun was found at Washington High School.

The prosecutor's office is also taking a closer look into who actually had possession of the gun found in the school Tuesday. Investigators believe as many as three students may be involved.

While no one has been charged yet, the superintendent is promising to make security tougher at all schools. Kapsa said his goal is to take a close look at security, not only at Washington High School, but at all of South Bend's schools.

That's good news for David Thompson. He raised concerns about safety after he went to check in at Washington's school office Tuesday morning.

"There was no security whatsoever; I was able to walk right into the building," Thompson said. "Never once was I stopped — and I was in regular street clothes — and never once was I stopped. Nobody questioned who I was or anything."

"There is security in place before school, and certainly throughout the day and after school until all the buses and all the activities are done," Kapsa said in a press conference Wednesday.

Thompson tells a different story. He said he roamed the halls with both the office and attendance office doors locked. He said this happened around 7:15 in the morning, just before the start of the school day.

"I actually walked all the way around the school building inside," said Thompson. "Completely around and came back out through the front door."

Wednesday morning, a South Bend Police cruiser was parked outside the school's door as the issue of weapons brought into the school surfaces for a third time. The district is exploring the use of metal detectors.

"It has been brought up before," said Kapsa. "At the time, I don't think the school board or the administration at the Education Center here were that interested."

Kapsa said security will get tougher.

"[We're looking at] possibly adding security, reviewing the exiting procedures, the doors that are open, the doors that are locked," he said. "The schedule first thing in the morning, the free time of the students, the passing periods all of that type of thing is going to be looked at very carefully and reviewed."

Kapsa confirms the substance found Tuesday along with the gun was marijuana.

Police and the district are continuing to investigate the circumstances and relationships of those involved.

Kapsa says the female student who was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center Tuesday night has been released to her family.

Kapsa added the review of security measures will take place immediately to prevent incidents like this from happening again.
