Shoppers turning to resale stores, junk yards to salvage savingsby Darla Hernandez (darlah@wsbt.com)
Miriam Viktora estimates she's saved hundreds of dollars shopping at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Mishawaka. (WSBT photo) MISHAWAKA — With a tight economy, people are finding creative ways to save on everything from fixing cars to home repairs. You can find both brand new and used items at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Mishawaka. Everything for your home is marked down 50-70 percent off what you would pay at a retail store, and for many, savings in a slow economy is key. Miriam Viktora says without Habitat ReStore, her home repairs would never be fixed. "I inherited an older house and it needs a lot of TLC. And I can find just about anything here; if it’s not there one day I just come back and it is later,” she told WSBT News. “With the economy being bad and more people shopping here it also gives us the funds to build more hopes to help people in the community,” explained Vivian Bolen, manager of the Mishawaka ReStore. Shoppers aren't just finding big bargains at stores like Habitat ReStore; auto junk yards have drivers digging for deals as well. “With the economy the way it is and gas prices the way they are, they’re trying to fix their own stuff up and supplement their repairs with used parts as opposed to buying new,” said Mike Niebalski of Mike’s Auto Salvage and Towing. Brandon Jackson says buying used tires keeps him treading below budget. "If that's what it takes, if it saves a little bit of cash here and there — anything you can do to save,” he said. One of the most popular used parts people come in to buy is mirrors. Used they cost about $35 but new they could run you up to $70. Whether shopping at the ReStore or junkyards, when purchasing used — always make sure to inspect the merchandise before you buy it. Viktora says she’s saved “hundreds and hundreds of dollars so far,” thanks to stores like ReStore. You can also donate new or gently used items at any Habitat for Humanity ReStore. There are ReStores in Mishawaka, South Bend, Goshen and Plymouth. For more information click on the link in the Related Content box. Most PopularMore Good Stuff |
