Residents have posted "Drug Watch Area" signs in the Elkhart neighborhood where a meth lab exploded. Neighbors feel the signs are working. (WSBT photo) ELKHART — A meth lab exploded and severely burned two people in Elkhart on October 16. The blast shook houses near the apartment unit on 2nd Street where the blast occurred. Multimedia Neighbors who were rocked out of bed are fed up and want the drug dealing to stop. They feel they have found a unique way to handle the problem themselves. Signs that say "Drug Watch Area" are going up in retaliation to last week's meth lab explosion. Neighbors want everyone to know they don't want something like that to happen again. “We want the drugs out of this neighborhood," Lori King told WSBT News. King is with Guidance Ministries, across the street from where the lab was found. She likes the signs. “I think it’s great because more people are going to be watching. More people may be picking up the phone if they're seeing something suspicious," she said. King says having the neighborhood work together to address the problem may not ultimately solve it, but it’s a step in the right direction. “Individuals can do something if they step out — and then another person — and together that synergy can really do and make a difference," King added. "You're seeing a lot less suspicious behavior, a lot less prostitutes. I think it’s making a big difference. I don't know how, but it is," said neighbor Mary Dominguez. Elkhart Police Sgt. Brent Long stated, "I don't encourage any citizens to try to go out and enforce the laws — leave that to us. But anything they can do to help make their neighborhood safer, definitely, is a benefit." It is certainly a sign of the times. Earlier this month Elkhart police also found the remnants of a working meth lab thrown in the trash behind one of the homes in that neighborhood.
