South Bend Obama supporters excited for change

SOUTH BEND — It was still too close to call in Indiana, but when Senator Barack Obama won St. Joseph County with 58 percent of the vote, so many people in our area were celebrating.

At the West Side Democratic Club the crowd was very excited.

"People are ready for change — actually ready for change,” said Obama supporter Patrick Shelton. “Obama is going to be able to, and those he surrounds himself with will be able to, make the change happen."

After months of campaigning, grassroots efforts of going door-to-door and making calls for much of the night, all Obama supporters could do was wait.

"My teeth are grinding,” said Andrew Jones. “I'm watching it very closely."

Watching as the numbers came in.

"We're confident and the numbers are going to show it," said Jennifer Peck.

In a race that was record breaking, historical, and down to the wire.

"That's what we are waiting on,” said Dorine Blake-Smith. “Down to the wire. I think at the bottom of the wire will be Obama."

Keeping the faith as election night pressed on, the numbers kept rolling in.

"Everybody that's here believes that we've done all that we can for change, and I think it's going to come through," said Jennifer Peck

Not long after, CBS News declared Barack Obama the winner in the race for president.
