SOUTH BEND -- Rising unemployment and increasing numbers of foreclosures have kept debt collectors very busy, but the tough economy hasn't made their jobs any easier.

They're finding many debtors are in the red, just trying to cover the basics -- food, shelter and medical needs.

Debt collectors say the key to financial freedom starts with communication.

"If the debt is not taken care of, neither is the next one," said Jeff Jankowski, attorney with Diamond and Diamond in South Bend.

He says the current economic situation has left many former Michiana workers drowning in debt. If accumulating bills are left ignored, Jankowski said, "It's mistake number one."

"It could leave the wrong impression that they aren't concerned or are ignoring their situation," said Cathy Martin with CBM Accounting. "It gives the impression they could care less about resolving it."

Both Martin and Jankowski believe picking up the phone leaves the best impression.

"Call us," said Jankowski. "Tell us this is the situation."

"At least they feel like someone is taking a small effort at solving their responsibility," said Martin.

"It doesn't go away until it's paid," said Jankowski.

Setting up some sort of payment arrangement with the collector will help pay down debt, building credibility in the process.

"Even a little bit at a time works," said Jankowski.

"Usually if there is an attempt made it's not likely it would fall into the court system," said Martin.

Debt collectors say they are willing to work with people as along as people are willing to work with them. That means being open and honest about your true financial situation, and setting up a realistic payment plan.
