Student hit by car waiting for school bus at Goshen intersection

Neighbors say they have seen many close calls at the intersection of Andrew and Victoria drives in Goshen. A 9-year-old girl waiting to board the school bus was hit by a car there on Monday, November 17, 2008. (WSBT photo)

GOSHEN — Neighbors say it's a dangerous intersection that needs change. A driver hit a little girl while she was getting on a school bus in Goshen Monday. She wasn't hurt, but that was just one in a series of scary accidents this year.

It was a day Robert Minegar and his 9-year-old daughter Faith won't soon forget. He had taken her to the intersection of Victoria and Andrew drives to wait for the school bus.

The intersection has no yield or stop signs. The bus pulled up and stopped with flashing lights.

As Faith followed two other students, a car came around the corner and struck her.

“She went up on the hood a little bit, then slid down onto the ground and fortunately she was still moving, she didn't lose any consciousness,” Robert Minegar told WSBT News.

“Was it scary?” Minegar asked his daughter.
“Yes!” she replied.
“Not a good way to start out the day, huh?” he said.
“No,” she agreed.

In August, there was a head-on collision at the intersection. In the past, there have been a lot of near misses.

Neighbors say the stretch of road on Victoria Drive that runs off of State Road 15 is the only way in or out of a growing subdivision, and gets its fair share of traffic.

Jana Murdock has been trying to get a stop sign at the intersection. Her daughter had just gotten on the bus Monday morning before this latest accident.

“I have been [trying] for months and months and there have been others in the subdivision, too, that have tried and they just get the runaround,” she said.

Year round, drivers end up going through the intersection and ending up in Jan Fribley's yard.

“But I am concerned about the speed with which people do come around the corner and go through here,” Fribley said. “We have a lot of children in this area."

"Accidents happen and I think if we had some sort of traffic signals, it would be of great help,” Minegar added.

Neighbors say they'll contact county officials later this week to make another request for a stop sign at the intersection.
