SOUTH BEND — Even after this weekend's winter storm moves out, we're still left digging out, trying to get back to normal. And not everyone wants to wait on the snow plow trucks to arrive. We met a man who does all the clearing for his neighbors for free.

On a Saturday afternoon, we found Joe Ziegler working on his truck, replacing a worn out wiper motor.

"Maybe my Heavenly Father wants me to take a break for a few minutes," saud Ziegler.

"Sometimes he's out here at 2 in the morning when it's snowing," said neighbor Glenn Benson.

Ziegler is a snow plow driver. It's his profession and his passion.

"I actually enjoy it. I love helping other people. That's what it's about, being a public servant. You want to help other people," said Ziegler.

Ziegler clears a half mile stretch of Pasedena Avenue where he lives. Then he plows nearly a dozen of his neighbors' driveways. All for free.

"When you look over here at these older people, if there would be an emergency or something like that, there's no way an emergency vehicle can get up and down the road. Plus, they can't get out to get their meds or get to the store or whatever," said Ziegler.

Neighbor Glenn Benson calls Ziegler's generosity amazing.

"In this day and age when it's a 'me too' attitude, and he's just one of a kind and we're all just blessed to have him here," said Benson.

But Ziegler sees it differently. He hopes his work will help spread a very important message.

"That's what it's about. You gotta pay it forward. The person right next door could be hurting and they don't have the extra ability to be able to make ends meet. But reach out there and help somebody," said Ziegler.
