ELKHART — Another source of help for the unemployed is causing more headaches. Just a week after a computer glitch delayed unemployment payments, nearly a dozen people say there were more computer problems at Elkhart's WorkOne office.
This time it wasn't their money that was held up; it was their claim information.
“They really need to do something with this,” said Ruth Hanson. “This place is worse every time I come up here."
Hanson came to the WorkOne office to clear up a question on unemployment benefits. She says she took a number, waited, and then was told to come back in an hour because the computers were down.
"So I waited,” Hanson continued, “and we just went back in and now they're saying that the people are supposed to come, their router’s down, people are supposed to come fix it, they're not sure just when they'll be here to fix it and it’s going to be at least 3-4 hours."
"I had an employment status issue on my voucher Sunday when I did it on the computer,” said Rocky Thompson. “And when I came in today to check on it, their system computers were down."
A number of people said they will have to make a return trip to the office once the problems are ironed out.
One of those was an Edwardsburg man who came to clear up questions on a form so he can get his benefits.
“That's why I came down here todaym to have them explain it to me. They can't get on there because their computers are down, so that means I've got to come back again,” Mark Woitovicz said. “Hopefully it comes, because I'm fixin’ to lose my place and everything because of this issue."
"I could not get online, the system is shut down,” said Bruce Heslet of Constantine, Mich. “It’s very [frustrating].”
“The way we are right now we're suffering, I mean everybody out here is really fighting to live,” Heslet added.
A spokesman for the Department of Workforce Development told WSBT News there were some problems with an Internet router. He says it never impacted benefits and is now fixed.
