NILES, Mich. — It's the largest manufacturer in Niles, but that will change in the next three months. Tyler Refrigeration says it will lay off 450 workers.

Tyler Refrigeration displays and systems are similar to what you'd find in a grocery store. Products are created for the food and retail industry across North America.

Carrier, the plant's parent company, announced it will fill current orders, decrease production for the rest of the year, then close its doors for good.

Now, workers who will be out of a job in two to three months wonder what's next.

Since, 1927 Tyler has been rooted to the city. But over the course of the next 90 days, that will change.

"She came home yesterday and said she's out of a job," said Gino Pagano, whose mother has worked at the plant since he was a young child.

Gino's mother and 449 other salaried and hourly workers learned they will lose their jobs once the plant closes.

"We have about 12 weeks, maybe less," said John Hess, an employee at the plant.

Hess said rumors had been circulating around the plant for weeks.

"There's always rumors," he said.

Officials from Carrier, Tyler's parent company, said an old product line and limited customization were some of the reasons it decided to sell, to Hill PHOENIX, a competitor.

"People are hurt. Salaried, union, they are all hurt," said Lyle Unger, President of Local 816. "It's a big blow to Niles here."

Forty plant workers were let go Friday.

Unger is afraid workers will not have anywhere else to turn to for work.

"You made real good money here," said Unger. "Where do you look at? Where do you even start at?"

A union representative told WSBT News a severance package will be offered. Terms will be disclosed Monday, and then the union will begin negotiations.
