ELKHART — Some soon-to-be laid off workers may not stick around to look for another job. Philips Products told an undisclosed number of employees the plant will be closing in 60 days. Many of them said it wasn't a surprise.

Philips has been for sale about 15 months. Workers tell WSBT the company already cut some jobs in that time period, whittling down from three shifts to one.

Company President Ron Mason said the closing affects about 675 employees nationwide, but said he didn’t know how many people work in the Elkhart plant.

When she pulled up to Philips Products looking for a job Wednesday, Adrian Sanchez said she didn’t even know the plant was closing.

“We got bills to pay, we got kids to take care of,” she said. “And every place you go it's just ‘No applications. Not hiring.’”

But people who work inside said they found out Monday that Philips is closing all of its plants in several states.

“A lot of people are sad,” one worker told WSBT.

Mike Wutzke, who has worked as a PC Technician in the company’s IT department, said there was always a possibility the plant could close.

Philips makes windows and doors for both homes and RVs. Since the company was put up for sale, the RV industry collapsed and the housing market turned dismal.

“We had a couple buyers come in and look around,” said one employee who only wanted to be identified as D.P. “Just nobody’s interested.”

Mason released a statement: "As all employees have continued to do the right things while providing high levels of customer service and quality products during what have recently been very challenging times."

“There are a lot of people out here that depend on the paycheck,” one employee said. “The economy's not helping.”

By the end of the summer, Philips will be another vacant building.

“There are a lot of people who have been here for a long time,” said D.P. “I’ll probably move out of the state. There's not much left here and I’m not gonna look around and wait around.”

And some people could move out of the area because they can’t wait forever for work.

“Elkhart isn’t exactly booming right now,” said Wutzke.

Employees estimate 150 people still work at Philips. The company says it will give all employees their official WARN notices Thursday.

The same parent company that owns Philips used to own the Ventline plant in Bristol. WSBT learned that plant will stay open because Dexter Axle now owns it. It is not affected by the Philips announcement.
