Pet Food Recall Helps Local Manufacturer

By WSBT News1

(WSBT) The pet food scare is helping a local pet food maker. Eagle Pack in Mishawaka says it has seen a 25% increase in sales since the scare began.

The company says it doesn't use gluten or any ingredients from countries, like China, that don't have high food standards.

John Marsman's pregnant dog sits in his Eagle Pack office waiting to give birth.

"You don't want to see anything happen to pets," said Marsman, Marketing Director at Eagle Pack Pet Foods.

Like other employees, he feeds his seven dogs Eagle Pack food.

But there was concern when the recall was first issued and wheat gluten wasn't identified as the culprit.

"You are responsible for pet diets and their sole nutrition, so there is always going to be some concern. Especially now with the recall, what are they going to find?" said Jessica Patterson, Quality Control Manager at Eagle Pack Pet Foods.

Their products weren't recalled, and people are buying more.

"Retailers are pulling the canned food product and some of the dry from the shelves. And because we have such a good reputation, we are one of the brands gaining that space. And I think it will last," said Marsman.

A new warehouse opened last year to hold the 600,000 pounds of food produced at the plant every day. They also added four hours to their workday.

Eagle Pack says they supply food to retailers in 50 countries and are still keeping up with the growing demand for now.

"We had a thought of adding an additional facility in our five year plan, but that could now be moved up and happen sooner," said Marsman.

Eagle Pack says current retailers are placing larger orders and they're getting calls from new retailers. They say it's all happening very quickly, but think the momentum will continue.

There are about a dozen stores in the area that carry their products.
Eagle Pack's website has a tool that allows you to search for the nearest store.
