Community Comes Together to Help the Mora Kids

By Beth Boehne

(WSBT) Two boys saw their mother murdered. Now, they have a new home. But a local builder wants to make sure they have plenty of space to play and start new memories.

Police say their father, Omar Mora, shot and killed his wife, Lisa, and another man they believe she was involved with. Investigators don't know where Mora is, but they found his truck earlier this week in Chicago.

Mora's mother-in-law, Linda Bowdler, called a local builder about finishing her basement so the boys could have their own rooms.

The Mora boys' toys are inside their new house but it doesn't look like a children's home.

“Just give them their own space, a new space, and not feel like they are living at Grandma and Grandpa's house, but that this is now their house,” Michael Kolesiak told WSBT News.

Kolesiak was contacted by the boys' grandmother to turn the unfinished basement into two bedrooms, a full bathroom and a playroom. He took the job — for free.

“I wanted to try to find a way to affect their lives to let them know that people still love people and people want to help people,” explained Kolesiak. “And it's about taking care of kids, and about making them feel comfortable.”

He started working on the project Thursday.

But his good deed has already turned into a community effort.

Kolesiak says businesses, like Brouwer's Carpet & Furniture, have gotten him halfway to his goal of raising $15,000 in less than 24 hours.

“Warsaw is a small community and if we can't come together to help each other, what are we here for?” said Brad Brouwer of Brower’s Carpet & Furniture.

Kolesiak says he wants the boys to always remember the community
that loves them.

“We are going to leave a lot of momentos here, a signature board for people to sign, special gifts that we haven't told them what they are yet,” Kolesiak said.

He's working hard to transform the space in less than two months — just in time for school.

Kolesiak and some local businesses are still accepting donations and volunteers.
