One More Time, For Zane and Zoie

By WSBT News1

(WSBT) This week family and friends are stepping in to finish a summer project a brother and sister couldn't.

Seventeen-year-old Zane Triplet and his 8-year-old sister, Zoie, were killed earlier this month when their minivan collided with a motorhome on U.S. 6 in Marshall County. Now, their friends and family are honoring the two by competing in the St. Joseph County Fair for them.

"For Zane and Zoie, this was the best week of the year because they loved being here with their friends," said Sherri Triplet, Zane and Zoie's mother.

The brother and sister spent the year getting ready for the 4H Fair together. But earlier this month, they died in a car accident.

"Up until four or five days right here before the fair, to a degree, it almost seemed like they were away at a basketball camp or sports camp — they'll be coming home," said their older brother, Zach. "But getting stuff ready for the fair and them not being there was a very real, made it very real."

Now, Zach and other family and friends will show Zane's livestock.

"When I was in 4H, if there was anything I wasn't able to do, he picked up my slack. And I want to do this for him," said Zach.

Participating in 4H is a Triplet family tradition.

"It's a wonderful thing when your family all enjoys doing the same thing and you can do it together," said Zach.

Zoie was planning to join next year, and her name was already added to the long list painted on the family's storage unit at the fair.

"Anything that Zach and Zane did, she thought she should do, too," said Sherri.

But this year, neither Zoie nor Zane will join their brother in the annual fair parade. And Zach will have to accept a 4H achievement award on his younger brother's behalf.

"I can't even begin to think about what that's going to be like, but, you know, I want to do it for him," said Zach.

The Triplets had planned on Zoie showing livestock over the next ten years, but, since her death, they decided this will be the last. They say they will continue to come to the fair because those activities always brought the family together and it will be a way to honor Zane and Zoie.

Zane's livestock will be auctioned off Friday. The proceeds will go toward a college scholarship in Zane and Zoie's honor. The scholarship will help a LaVille High School senior who, like Zane was, is involved in sports and 4H and wants to go to college.

The family says the auction will be the hardest part of the week because it will signal the end.
