Jim Pinkerton is the co-anchor of WSBT News at 5:30 and 6 p.m. He also anchors WSBT News at 10 on SBT2 (Digital channel 22.2, Comcast cable channel 16, and Dish TV Channel 30) and serves as the station’s senior managing editor.
Born and raised in Michiana, Jim’s television career has taken him to WYIN-TV in Gary and WAGT-TV in Augusta, Georgia. He also worked as a newspaper editor, a radio news anchor, managed a convention center and worked in public relations. Jim joined WSBT in 1997.
After the Sept. 11th attacks, Jim spent several days on-board the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which was stationed off the coast of Pakistan. He profiled South Bend-area soldiers who were fighting the war on terrorism. NEWS22 on the Frontline won a first place award from the Associated Press for "Best News Series."
The AP also awarded Jim first place honors for "Best Spot News Reporting" and "Best Breaking News Story" for his work covering a series of tornado touchdowns in the Crumstown area of St. Joseph County in October 2001. Jim was the first reporter on the scene and reported live on the breaking story for several hours.
In 2008, the AP recognized his work on a series of reports looking at the impact of the Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo. He was also the only local reporter to have a one-on-one interview with presidential candidate Barack Obama.
Jim graduated from Buchanan High School and earned his B.A. in Broadcast Journalism from Valparaiso University. He is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists. Away from work, Jim volunteers as a mentor in the South Bend School Corporation and is a member of First United Methodist Church in Mishawaka.
