By (BI) Jay LaPlante

Ed Ernstes joined WSBT News as a reporter in March of 1981. He covered the South Bend area originally, and now covers the news around all of Elkhart County. He has also traveled the country and to Europe for WSBT News. Prior to working at WSBT, he worked at WTHI-TV news in Terre Haute for 2½ years.

Ed originally hails from Greensburg, Indiana, and comes from a large family of five brothers and three sisters. He graduated from Ball State in 1972 and served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1972-1975, including a one-year tour in Germany. From there, he attended an electronics school in Denver, then went on to earn a Masters degree in TV and Radio from San Diego State University. During graduate school he interned at KFMB-TV in San Diego.

Ed's free time activities include working as a committee member for the Elkhart Airshow, volunteering for his church's food delivery program, and exercising/weight lifting. He's also acted in movies filmed around the area.

Ed is very proud of his daughter in graduate school at Loyola University in Chicago, who recently was married.
