Pete Byrne is happy to return home to Michiana after a seven-year hiatus. He grew up in South Bend and went to high school at Trinity where he played basketball, baseball and, “just a little soccer. I was the goalie!”, he admits.
Pete stayed home to attend Notre Dame, and graduated with a degree in communications in 1999. While at ND, he was the equipment manager for the football and hockey programs, and won two monograms.
Following college, the appeal of sub-zero temperatures with -60° wind chills was too great to ignore...so he moved up to the Great White North to begin a career in sports journalism. He worked as a sports producer at Midwest Sports Channel & WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, and most recently as a reporter and anchor at KVLY-TV in Fargo, ND, where he’s covered everything from the Minnesota Vikings and the Final Four…to curling and the occasional outdoor softball game in February.
“The key is to stay away from the yellow snow”, Pete says. Pete is thrilled to be back in Michiana, covering his beloved Fighting Irish, along with all his other favorite local teams including the Cubs, Bears, and Bulls. He’s also happy to be back covering some of the best high school sports around, including Hoosier Hysteria -- “The best high school basketball in the country if you ask me!”
You can watch Pete on WSBT on the weekends, and as the host of Irish Sports Report on Sunday nights! Don’t be surprised if you find him out at a local golf course...talking up a better game than he can play! When not ruining his handicap, he likes to spend free time at the gym, playing PS2, and enjoying the company of his lovely wife Jen, also an ND grad.
