Nicholasville firefighters battled a grass fire off U.S. 27 near the railroad underpass in Nicholasville on June 25 -- one of six such fires they fought that day. City and county firefighters were busy throughout the hot, dry summer; a July 1 blaze tore through 25 acres off Beaumont Road, destroying a woman's home and killing her three dogs.
