Dental Fluorosis

The Centers for Disease Control says the most common side effect from higher-than-recommended fluoride intake in the US is Dental Fluorosis. It causes spots, streaks or, in the worst casts, pits in tooth enamel. It happens when teeth are forming, so it only affects children eight and younger. For parents in communities with fluoride levels over 2.0 ppm, the CDC recommends finding an alternate water source for children under eight. For most Americans, the CDC says, if you follow guidelines for your child's toothbrushing, then the danger is minimal.
