Bumble Bee Foods recalled 2.4 million cans of tuna this week because of loose seals, the San Diego-based company said Thursday.
The affected products -- 5-ounce cans of chunk white albacore and chunk light tuna sold under the Bumble Bee and Brunswick brands -- were sold nationwide between Jan. 17 and March 6.
No illnesses have been reported so far, the company said.“We’re voluntary recalling products to ensure the highest margin of safety and quality,” said Steve Mavity, the company’s senior vice president of technical services and corporate quality assurance.
The company said it learned Wednesday of a manufacturing line problem that caused the cans to be improperly sealed, which could cause the tuna to spoil and lead to illness if consumed.
The problem has since been corrected, Mavity said in a statement.
Consumers are urged to discard the cans. For information about the recall or reimbursement consumers may call (888) 820-1947. The company posted a complete list and description of cans that are affected online.
